B.A. Christian Education

Department of Missions and Christian Education · 4 years · 53 courses · 100% online

About this programme

The Sunday school teacher in most Nigerian churches was handed a quarterly, a room and a prayer. Christian schools open with committed staff and no agreed philosophy of what makes the teaching Christian. Meanwhile churches are putting classes online without knowing whether anyone is learning anything.

This degree sits where theology and education meet. Alongside the Academy's common core of Bible, doctrine, interpretation and church history, you work in three connected fields: how people learn at different ages, how a curriculum is designed rather than borrowed, and how a teaching institution is governed. The thinking is diagnostic throughout, since you must be able to say what a lesson is for and how anyone would know whether it worked. Online delivery is treated as a discipline in its own right.

You will finish able to design a course, teach it, run the department that delivers it and judge the results. Picture the next term you plan being built rather than inherited. If that is the standard you want to teach at, this is where to begin, and your application is welcome.

53 courses across 8 semesters, about 4 years of study.

Who it is for

Pastors, church workers and first-time students who want a full undergraduate education in ministry. No previous theological training is assumed; the first year begins at the beginning.

What you will be able to do

Preach and teach responsibly, handle Scripture with care, lead a congregation or ministry, and continue to postgraduate study if you choose.

How you will study

Every course here runs the same way, so you always know where you are.

  • Six study modules a course, each with a handout you can read on screen or download.
  • Video and audio of the same teaching, for studying while you travel or work.
  • A short refresher quiz to open each course. It is not scored, and you may retake it.
  • Two tests along the way, then a final examination. The pass mark is 50%.
  • Results appear as soon as you submit.

Study is entirely online and at your own pace. Everything works on a phone, and handouts can be downloaded to read without data.

Entry requirements

Open to school leavers and to mature students. No previous theological training is required. You must be at least 14 years old.
