About this programme
There are still communities within a day's drive of most Nigerian cities where no church has taken root, and the reasons are rarely about distance. They are about language, custom, suspicion and history. Many willing missionaries arrive with a message they have not learned how to carry across a cultural boundary, and they come home discouraged.
Building on the Academy's common core of Bible, doctrine, interpretation and church history, this degree is about crossing cultural boundaries. Its central discipline is anthropological: you learn to read a community's language, customs and history before speaking into it, and to weigh a message by how it will be heard rather than how it was meant. Mission history supplies the evidence, and because many closed places admit no missionaries, supporting yourself by honest trade is studied as seriously as the theology.
You will finish able to enter an unfamiliar community, learn it before you speak, support yourself honourably and plant something that outlasts your stay. Imagine arriving already knowing what to look for. If a particular people has stayed on your mind, this is the training that takes you to them. Apply, and start preparing.
