About this programme

Some people are not satisfied with knowing what the church believes. They want to know why, on what grounds, and what happens to the rest of the system if one part is changed. If you are the person who keeps asking the question behind the question, a general ministry degree will leave you hungry.

This degree shares the Academy's common core of Bible, interpretation, church history, apologetics and ethics, then goes further into doctrine than any other programme here. The doctrines are taken one at a time and in order, so that you learn to see a system rather than a set of positions, and to trace what follows elsewhere when one part is altered. Beside that sits the history of Christian thought and the discipline of doing theology in an African setting, which trains judgement as much as memory. The work ends in supervised research and a written dissertation.

You will finish able to state a doctrine, defend it from Scripture and show where it came from. Picture yourself with the reading, the supervision and the room to follow a question to the end of it. If that is the study you have been waiting for, send in your application.

53 courses across 8 semesters, about 4 years of study.

Who it is for

Pastors, church workers and first-time students who want a full undergraduate education in ministry. No previous theological training is assumed; the first year begins at the beginning.

What you will be able to do

Preach and teach responsibly, handle Scripture with care, lead a congregation or ministry, and continue to postgraduate study if you choose.

How you will study

Every course here runs the same way, so you always know where you are.

  • Six study modules a course, each with a handout you can read on screen or download.
  • Video and audio of the same teaching, for studying while you travel or work.
  • A short refresher quiz to open each course. It is not scored, and you may retake it.
  • Two tests along the way, then a final examination. The pass mark is 50%.
  • Results appear as soon as you submit.

Study is entirely online and at your own pace. Everything works on a phone, and handouts can be downloaded to read without data.
