About this programme
Doctrine is where much of the pressure now falls. A minister is asked what the church believes about the Spirit, about suffering, about the last things, and increasingly about technology, and the answers he inherited do not always survive the question. This degree is for those who want to think through Christian doctrine as a whole and in its own order, rather than one topic at a time.
Study begins with method, with how theology proceeds and what authority its sources carry. The doctrines are then taken in turn and set within the history of Christian thought, from the fathers to the present, so that you come to see the confession of the church as a whole rather than as a list of positions. Each is tested against present pressures, including African and other global voices, public argument in a media age, and the ethical demands technology now makes. Two seminars carry the research from proposal to defence.
You will graduate able to state a doctrine, defend it, and show where it came from. Picture a question that once unsettled you being one you can now answer at length and in order. If lecturing, advising a denomination or doctoral work is in view, this is the place to prepare.
16 courses across 4 semesters, about 2 years of study.

What you will be able to do
Teach the subject, supervise others, write to a scholarly standard, and lead at a senior level in the church or in theological education.
How you will study
Every course here runs the same way, so you always know where you are.
- Six study modules a course, each with a handout you can read on screen or download.
- Video and audio of the same teaching, for studying while you travel or work.
- A short refresher quiz to open each course. It is not scored, and you may retake it.
