About this programme

You finished a degree in accounting, engineering or education, and years later you are leading a church, teaching a class or being asked to speak with authority you were never trained to carry. Your first degree counts for a great deal and for nothing at all when a seminary asks for a theological qualification. Starting a second bachelor's degree is not a realistic answer.

This is a graduate-level treatment of the ground a theology degree covers, taught at the pace of people who already know how to study. You work through the theology of both Testaments, systematic theology and the methods behind it, and the major movements of church history. Exegesis and hermeneutics are given particular weight, since most theological disagreement turns out to be disagreement about reading. Research methods and a supervised project complete the work.

You will finish able to read theological literature critically, write to academic standard and defend your own research. Picture yourself sitting down to master's-level study with the qualification a seminary asks for already in hand. Professionals who want depth rather than another title start here, and so can you.

12 courses across 2 semesters, about 1 year of study.

Who it is for

Graduates of any discipline moving into theological study. If you hold a degree in another field, this is your bridge, and it carries you into the Master's programmes.

What you will be able to do

Read theology at postgraduate level, write to an academic standard, and proceed directly into a Master's degree here.

How you will study

Every course here runs the same way, so you always know where you are.

  • Six study modules a course, each with a handout you can read on screen or download.
  • Video and audio of the same teaching, for studying while you travel or work.
  • A short refresher quiz to open each course. It is not scored, and you may retake it.
  • Two tests along the way, then a final examination. The pass mark is 50%.
  • Results appear as soon as you submit.

Study is entirely online and at your own pace. Everything works on a phone, and handouts can be downloaded to read without data.
